The biggest DDOS attack of all time.
The biggest DDOS attack of all time.
The attack sent a maximum of 128.9 million data packets per second and 1.3 terabytes of Internet traffic per second (TBPS).
This was a memcached DDOS attack. So no botnet was involved. The attackers exploited the amplification effect of a popular database caching system known as memcached. The attackers were able to increase their attack by about 50000x by floating memchached servers with snoofed requests!
Fortunately, GitHub was using DDOS protection, which was automatically alerted within 10 minutes of the start of the attack, and this alert began to mitigate the attack, and GitHub was able to quickly stop the attack.
The world's largest DDOS attack lasted only 20 minutes.
Five days after the attack on GitHub, another alleged 1.6 tbps traffic DDOS attack took place. However, github has never published this topic publicly and not much information has been published about it, so it is not possible to say exactly about it. So many thanks so far today for bothering to read this post to the end.
